My name is Barbara Flaherty and I am seeking re-election to the BATV Board of Directors. I have been involved with BATV for the past 14 years and have found the experience both rewarding and enjoyable. I first became active with BATV in my capacity as Director of Billerica Public Library. I feel that the mission of BATV is very closely allied with that of the library since they are both in the business of free and open access to information for all.
I received my Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Massachusetts and my Master’s in Library and Information Science from Simmons College. Before my retirement in July of 2011, I co-hosted “Library Lowdown” a monthly BATV show which highlighted the services, programs and collections available at the library. I have served as Vice President of the BATV Board and as President for two terms. I have been past chair of the Producer Grant Committee and I am currently chairing the Strategic Planning Committee.
I am on the Board of Directors of the Greater Billerica Boys and Girls Club, the Billerica Council on Aging and the Bennett Public Library Association. I am also a member and past President of the Billerica Historical Society. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, traveling and spending time with my 24 year-old, son Ryan and my husband Chuck.
I believe access television is a vitally important communication and education vehicle for the community. Local access improves the public’s ability to participate in their government as well as encourages their involvement. I am deeply committed to the rights afforded us in the First Amendment and Billerica Access Television allows local citizens to exercise those rights.
I am anxious to continue to offer my time, experience and commitment to Billerica Access Television, Inc.
